The Red Barn Theater’s classic film series continues July 31 with “The Sound of Music," the hugely popular 1965 musical epic that won five Oscars and guaranteed Julie Andrews her place as the genre's top ingenue. Based on the Broadway play by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II the won Best Picture honors and topped "Gone with the Wind" as the most lucrative picture in history.
Andrews is Maria a role played on Broadway by Mary Martin. Christopher Plummer is Captain Von Trapp, widower with seven children who weds Maria, and Eleanor Parker is the Baroness, who has her own eyes on the Captain.
The picture is nearly three hours long, but the magnificent scenery and show-stopping hits make viewing a pleasure. "Do-Re-Mi," "Climb Every Mountain," "Sixteen Going on Seventeen," and even "The Lonely Goatherd" make this a perfect event for families.
At least half of the show's songs became hits, some several times as jazz musicians such as John Coltrane ("My Favorite Things") recorded individual tunes as well as entire albums (Stan Getz)

The Red Barn Theater’s classic film series continues July 24 with “Evil Under the Sun ," a 1981 mystery featuring Peter Ustinov as Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot, with James Mason, Diana Rigg and Roddy McDowall in major character roles. The book is based on Christie's 1941 novel.
An insurance company hires Poirot to check the authenticity of a gigantic engagement ring that had been returned to a millionaire by his unscrupulous former fiancee. Confirming the suspicion that the diamond is a fake, Poirot agrees to travel to an island resort where the ex-fiancee is vacationing and to confront her there.
Maggie Smith is featured as the owner of the island resort hotel, given to her by a former king of "Tyrania" for services rendered. Mason is a New York theatrical producer, and McDowall steals his scenes by impersonating Noel Coward as a theater critic. The whole joint is crawling with former chorus girls (the redoubtable Ms. Rigg foremost among them) and all manner of theater folk drawn to the island as former colleagues of Ms. Smith.
The complicated story is sure to please Agatha Christie fans as well as those of Peter Ustinov who wears very well as the amazing Belgian detective.

The script is based on a play by Agatha Christie (which was based loosely on her book, which was considerably grimmer). The film could be seen as a precursor to modern slasher films with very little visible gore.
Ten strangers, relatively evil folks, are summoned to an island off the coast of Devon by a Mr. Owen, whom none of them knows. Soon, the ten begin to see their fellows voted off the island by way of murder. Each time someone dies, the nonsense poem "Ten Little Indians" is recited, and each death corresponds to one in the poem, and in the proper order. This, of course, is the title of Christie's original book.

Based on a novel by Robert Penn Warren, the plot revolves around a woman’s discovery that she is descended from slaves, not plantation aristocrats.
Amantha Starr (De Carlo) is the privileged daughter of a Kentucky plantation owner. However, after he dies, a shocking secret is revealed: unbeknownst to Amantha, her mother had been one of her father's black slaves. Legally now property, she is taken by a slave trader to New Orleans to be sold.
Amantha is put up for auction. When she is callously inspected by a coarse potential buyer, she is rescued from further humiliation by Hamish Bond (Gable), who outbids the cad, paying an exorbitant price for her. Expecting the worst, Amantha is surprised to be treated as a lady, not a slave, by her new owner. At his city mansion, she meets his key slaves, his housekeeper (and former lover) Michele (Carolle Drake) and his conflicted right-hand-man Rau-Ru (Poitier). Rau-Ru is grateful for the kindness, education and trust Hamish has bestowed on him, but hates him anyway. Over time, Amantha loves Bond, but finds out that he had been a slave trader.

The Red Barn Theater’s film series continues June 12 with “Murder on the Orient Express,” a 1974 realization of Agatha Christie’s 1934 novel featuring a vast cast of film stars topped by Albert Finney as Hercule Poirot, whose little gray cells solve the most difficult of cases. Ingrid Bergman won an Oscar for her portrayal of, oddly enough, a middle-aged Swedish governess.
The film adheres fairly closely to Christie’s original plot. Poirot, returning from a case in the Middle East, boards the Orient Express to travel homeward. Poirot is asked by his friend Bianchi (Martin Balsam), a train company director, to investigate the murder of an American business tycoon, Mr. Ratchett (Richard Widmark, aboard a train with an all-star cast of suspects, among them Bergman, Lauren Bacall, Sean Connery, Sir John Gielgud, Vanessa Redgrave, Michael York, and Anthony Perkins.
The plot turns on the discovery that the business tycoon was actually a vicious criminal who many years before had kidnapped and killed an infant belonging to a wealthy family, reminiscent of the slaying of the Lindbergh baby. Given this revelation, it is hard not to empathize with the 13 suspects, but Poirot carries on, actually providing two alternative solutions to the mystery.

The Red Barn Theater’s film series continues April 24 with “The Dirty Dozen," the classic 1967 war movie starring Lee Marvin and Ernest Borgnine and a great ensemble cast playing a host of reprehensibles especially trained to assassinate Nazi officers.
Directed by Robert Aldrich and written by Nunnally Johnson, the film won an Oscar for best effects and John Cassavettes was nominated for Best Supporting Actor. “Dirty” was also nominated for a host of other awards.
The action ensemble featured Charles Bronson, Jim Brown, Cassavetes, Richard Jaekel, George Kennedy, Trini Lopez, Robert Ryan, Telly Savalas, Donald Sutherland, and Clint Walker. Marvin plays a major with a bad attitude but ways of getting things done. His mission is to take a bunch of Army prison fodder and lead a stealth attack on a posh vacation chateau for German officers in occupied France, in hopes of disrupting German command before D-Day.
The convicts include Wladislaw (Bronson), a German-speaking former officer who attacked a superior rather than follow a stupid order, black activist Jefferson (Brown), gangster Franco Cassavetes), psychopath Maggott (Savalas), and mentally slow Pinkley.
Much of the film covers the training of the group and the harsh discipline Major Reisman (Marvin) lays down to convert the misfits into a team. Once they land in France, all hell breaks loose and the ensuing action is brilliantly directed and acted.

The action ensemble featured Charles Bronson, Jim Brown, Cassavetes, Richard Jaekel, George Kennedy, Trini Lopez, Robert Ryan, Telly Savalas, Donald Sutherland, and Clint Walker. Marvin plays a major with a bad attitude but ways of getting things done. His mission is to take a bunch of Army prison fodder and lead a stealth attack on a posh vacation chateau for German officers in occupied France, in hopes of disrupting German command before D-Day.
The convicts include Wladislaw (Bronson), a German-speaking former officer who attacked a superior rather than follow a stupid order, black activist Jefferson (Brown), gangster Franco Cassavetes), psychopath Maggott (Savalas), and mentally slow Pinkley.
Much of the film covers the training of the group and the harsh discipline Major Reisman (Marvin) lays down to convert the misfits into a team. Once they land in France, all hell breaks loose and the ensuing action is brilliantly directed and acted.

Mason, who had earlier played Captain Nemo, another Verne hero, stars as Sir Oliver Lindenbrook, a renowned scientist who discovers evidence that a scientist from a few centuries earlier had found a pathway from the volcanoes in Iceland to the center of the earth. He writes to Swedish Professor Peter Göteborg, an expert in volcanoes, with his findings before proceeding with an expedition to the center of the earth. But Göteborg decides to double-cross Lindenbrook, utilizing the findings to be first at the center. Lindenbrook and one of his students, Alec McKuen (Boone) who is engaged to Lindenbrook's niece (Baker), quickly embark for Iceland for their own journey to the center to beat Göteborg.
In Iceland, they find Göteborg has been murdered, seemingly by Count Saknussem, a descendant of the original Icelandic explorer. They recruit Hans Belker, a brawny Icelandic farmer with a pet duck (typical of an Icelander) to do much of the manual work. But they must also reluctantly include Carla Göteborg (Dahl), Professor Göteborg's wife, who will not let them use her husband's prized equipment otherwise. The four plus duck proceed on their precarious journey with Carla and Lindenbrook often at odds. They do not know that behind them Count Saknussem will stop at nothing to beat Lindenbrook to the center. Directed by Henry Levin, the film was nominated for several technical Oscars.

Travolta stars as George, a mechanic in a rural California town. On his birthday, George celebrates at a bar with friends Nate (Forest Whitaker) and Doc (Robert Duvall), the local physician. When he steps outside, George sees a bright light in the sky and falls briefly unconscious. He awakens with incredible intellectual and physical powers. Good thing he’s a Nice Guy. In quick order he learns he can read books by the wheelbarrow, becomes an inventor, a psychic, has telekinetic powers, predicts an earthquake, and memorizes Portuguese in minutes.
Using his powers For Good, George becomes a hero, but he can't totally win over the spooked townsfolk, who view him as a freak, or the standoffish Lace (Sedgwick), a single mom burned by love once too often. As George's kindness breaks down Lace's reserve and a romance begins, his fame spreads, bringing him to the attention of the FBI and curious university scientists. They, of course, want to use his powers for Other Purposes.

Lightning steadfastly refused to strike twice for the director/actor team of Alexander Korda and Charles Laughton. Though the pair had scored an international success with the 1933 quasi-biopic The Private Life of Henry VIII, they couldn't make the magic happen again with 1936's Rembrandt. Laughton's performance is solid throughout, and Korda's recreation of Rembrandt's Holland is meticulous, but the film suffers from a lack of overall dramatic tension. Except for his artistic achievements and the deaths of his two wives, nothing really "happens" to Rembrandt--at least nothing as colorful as the escapades of Henry VIII. The best element of the film is the successful effort by cinematographer Georges Perinal to recreate the famous "Rembrandt lighting" effect in each scene. Join Hercule Poirot, everybody’s favorite Belgian detective, as The Red Barn Theater’s film series continues March 27 with “Death on the Nile” a luxurious 1978 production featuring Peter Ustinov, Bette Davis, Angela Lansbury, Maggie Smith and David Niven.
Based on Agatha Christie’s 1937 novel, the film finds Poirot (Ustinov) aboard a steamer cruising the Nile with a gaggle of nasty folks, many of them who want the wealthy heiress Linnet Ridgeway (Lois Chiles) dead. A killer grants their wish, and Poirot must find out who before the ship reaches port and the murderer makes an escape.
This was the second novel featuring Poirot to be filmed, after “Murder On The Orient Express.” starring Albert Finney in 1974. Ustinov presents a more humorous Poirot: “Steward, there is a cobra by the lounge. Please remove it.” Bette Davis, Maggie Smith and Jack Warden clearly enjoy their roles. Angela Lansbury manages to outdo them all with a delightfully over the top performance as the perpetually drunk author of erotic novels. David Niven portrays an archetypal ex-soldier, and Poirot's partner in the investigation.
Cinematographer Jack Cardiff uses the gorgeous Egyptian scenery to great effect. The 1930's setting also gives an air of genteel opulence to the surroundings. Because nobody expected the film to be a tension filled mystery, it is pleasant, laid back and enjoyable entertainment, but still clever enough to keep you guessing until the end.

Fans of screwball comedy are fulsomely rewarded as The Red Barn Theater’s film series continues March 13 with 1964’s “Good Neighbor Sam,” a perfect vehicle for the ever harassed Jack Lemmon and several television stalwarts of the era.
Under the direction of David Swift, the rollicking cast gets the most out of a plot that features a hundred comedic twists. Lemmon, as Sam, is a happily married man who lives in the suburbs with his wife, Min (Dorothy Provine of Warner Brothers television fame) and two nice kids. Min’s best friend, divorcee Janet (Romy Schneider) moves in next door with a big problem: she stands to inherit $15 million if she can prove she is married. Of course the Lemmon wants to help, so he agrees to pose at her husband.
The agreement also puts at risk Sam’s job at the Burke and Hare advertising agency, where he has received a promotion based on his good moral character. (Fans of nineteenth century crime will recognize Burke and Hare as the names of the two most famous body snatchers in history; they provided suspiciously fresh cadavers for Edinburgh University’s medical students.)
Watch for such television stalwarts as Louis Nye of the “Steve Allen Show” as a detective, Mike Connors (“Mannix”) as Janet’s estranged husband, and Joyce Jameson, a popular blonde bombshell as a hotel hooker.
