Van Buren State Park will hold its 6th Annual 5K run/walk on Saturday, June 18,2011. Medals will be awarded to the top finishers in the competitive run. THe first 100 participants to register will receive a free T-Shirt when they check-in on race day.


There is no cost to participate; however a Recreation Passport is required for vehicles entering the park.

A History of Vintage Base Ball and the South Haven Bark Peelers

In 2009, with the sponsorship and financial backing of the Historical Association of South Haven and Albemarle Corporation, the Bark Peelers Vintage Base Ball Club was formed. The team is composed of 18 "gentlemen" from around the South Haven community who, although not necessarily great ballplayers, love the game of baseball and enjoy the opportunity to play. Vintage Base Ball recreates the way the game was played after the end of the Civil War.

After the end of the Civil War (1865), town teams would offer challenges to each other. Back in those days for one team to travel to a neighboring town was a real effort as roads were not well developed and the main mode of transportation was horse drawn wagons. The whole philosophy of being a host team in a Base Ball game in the 1860s was completely 180 degrees from what it is today. Because it was so difficult for teams to travel to another town to play Base Ball, it was the responsibility of the host team to ensure that the visiting team was treated with great civility and friendship. The host teams took great pride in their ability to be good hosts for the visitors. Host teams went out of their way to find accommodations and provide sumptuous meals for the visiting teams. This philosophy of being good hosts carried over into how the actual game was played. Players took great pride in being “gentlemanly”. Some examples:

• No profanity or derogatory comments were aimed towards the visitors by either the host players or “cranks” (fans). This does not include good natured insults that are normal in this type of game.

• Both the players and the host “cranks” would applaud a good play or good hit by the visitors with a hearty “huzzah” or “well struck” as a sign of appreciation for the high quality of Bball that was being played

• There were no hard slides or any intentional physical contact with opposing players

• The batter indicated to the hurler where he wanted the pitch to be placed. The hurler than tried to throw the ball to that spot

• Players were expected to make their own calls on whether they were out or safe or whether they made a catch or not. The umpire was simply there to enforce the “rules of conduct” or resolve a play that was too close to call by the players

Blazing her own trail in the mid 70s when there were few role models for a young woman in the genre, Claire Lynch made history leading the Front Porch String Band, which evolved in the 80s and 90s into “one of the sharpest and most exciting post-modern bluegrass bands on the circuit.” In 2005, after raising a family, Lynch started her own Claire Lynch Band. After a busy touring schedule in 2010, Claire received three IBMA nominations and took home the trophy for Female Vocalist of the Year.

Snowmobiling on the Kal-Haven Trail

Travel through small towns, beautiful wooded areas, countryside, and pass points of historical interest. Towns along the way have food and lodging for trail users. Unique experience for cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. 34-mile trail from South Haven to Kalamazoo. Snowmobilers are exempt from buying daily or annual Kal-Haven Trail Passes, but instead are required to purchase a Michigan Snowmobile Trail Permit to use the trail.

There must be a minimum of 4 inches of snow. Snowmobiles must be registered with the Michigan Secretary of State and riders MUST display a snowmobile Trail Permit. Annual Michigan Snowmobile Trail Permits are sold for $35 in most cases are available where you would purchase a hunting and or fishing license. SINGAPORE, MICHIGAN

NAME: Singapore

COUNTY: Allegan
CLIMATE: snow in winter, hot in summer, cool in spring/autumn

 COMMENTS: just downriver of Saugatuck on the northernmost bend of the Kalamazoo River along Lake Michigan. Buried beneath sand dunes.

REMAINS: 23 buildings and 2 mills beneath sand dunes

Founded in 1836, started out as a single saw mill. First schoolhouse in Michigan was built on Singapore Road in Singapore. First teacher was Elizabeth Peckham. Shortly after the Civil War, Singapore was involved in a bank scandal. Federal banks were required to maintain a minimum amount of currency, and neither Singapore nor Allegan was at that level. Allegan Federal Bank would receive warning from nearby towns that the bank inspector was coming through. They would arrange for all the money from Sinapore Federal Bank would be transfered to Allegan Federal Bank. After the inspection, the banker in Allegan would take the bank inspector out and get him drunk. While he slept it off, they would get a head start on him and take all the money from Allegan to Singapore Federal Bank in time to pass the inspection there. At its peak in the 1870s, had 23 buildings, 2 working saw mills, and about 200 residents. In 1871, its remaining timber was cleared for use in rebuilding after the Great Fire of 1871 in Holland, MI (which occurred at the same time as the Great Fire of 1871 in Chicago, IL). Without the trees to shelter the town from the winds coming in off Lake Michigan, it was soon covered by the sand drifts and is now buried beneath the dunes. Submitted by: Brian Tice

GLENN, MICHIGAN

Glenn was first settled in 1843. Before 1876 this area was known by many names, including Packard's Corner and New Casco. Glenn has been used since 1856. As the land was cleared, crops and orchards were planted. Shipping became necessary, so piers were built out into the lake. The boats that carried fruit into the cities would bring vacation-bound passengers on the return trip. The resort business increased and Glenn grew rapidly. By 1897 the community had developed enough to support three grocery stores, a drug store, a meat market, two blacksmiths, a barber shop, two hotels, and several other businesses. During the 1920's truck transportation replaced the need for the piers. The blizzard of 1937 established Glenn as a community filled with hospitality. Travelers who were marooned in Glenn spread the word about this area=s people and warmth. A pancake festival was set up to celebrate the blizzard that next spring. This festival continued until 1941, when World War II forced its cancellation. The festival was revived in the 1960's and continues today. Since the construction of Interstate 196 rerouted traffic, Glenn saw a decline in tourism during the 1960's. The resort businesses were gone and life styles were changed forever.

PIER COVE, MICHIGAN

Pier Cove was laid out by Deacon Sutherland in 1851 as a platted town in Allegan County. A steam sawmill and wood shop were constructed. The wood shop was later made into a grist mill, which was needed in the area. Two piers, measuring approximately 323 foot, were built. This area was thought of as a village, which boasted about its twenty families, four stores, a tavern, post office, grist mill and three hotels. As the cord wood supply was depleted, the fire of 1871 occurred, and the railroad came to Fennville, the Village of Pier Cove diminished in population and importance. One pier remained in service into 1919. Both piers were destroyed by storms in the 1900's and were not rebuilt.

CITY OF SOUTH HAVEN-STEAMSHIP

Originally the civilian steamship City of South Haven (1903)

USS CITY OF SOUTH HAVEN, a 1719 gross ton coastal troop transport, was built at Toledo, Ohio, in 1903 as the passenger steamship of the same name. She operated commercially on the Great Lakes, primarily on southern Lake Michigan, for the next fifteen years. In April 1918 the ship was purchased by the Navy and sent to Chicago, Illinois, for conversion work.

Commissioned in November 1918,
two days before the Armistice ended the First World War fighting, CITY OF SOUTH HAVEN left the lakes later in the month and went to Boston, Massachusetts, to prepare for service in European waters. However, this requirement soon evaporated and she remained in the U.S.

Sold in December 1919,

Her new owners renamed her CITY OF MIAMI and operated her between Florida and Cuba. The steamer returned to the Great Lakes in 1923. Under the name E.G. CROSBY, she was employed on Lake Michigan until laid up in 1931. While idle at Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, she suffered massive fire damage in December 1935 and was subsequently scrapped.

South Haven- Kal-Haven Trail

Here are the details:

The Kal-Haven Trail is a 33.5 mile long linear multi-use trail that links Kalamazoo a major southwest Michigan city to South Haven a Lake Michigan resort area. The trail starts in South Haven on North Bailey Avenue and ends in Kalamazoo on 10th Street.

The route of the Kal-Haven originally was a railroad compleated in 1870, the railroad bed has been converted to a trail with a limestone/slag surface. It is usable for all non-motorized bicycles, hiking, and snowmobiling when there is a 4-inch snow base. In 2004 Van Buren County obtained a use permit to operate and maintain The Kal-Haven Trail Sesquicentennial State Park. Van Buren County continues to operate the trail under this permit.

The trail fee was suspended the first of 2011.
