The Red Barn Theater’s film series continues June 5 with “Terms of Endearment,” the 1982 romantic comedy featuring Shirley McLaine, Debra Winger, and Jack Nicholson. With a story based on Larry McMurtry’s novel, the film won five Oscars. McLaine was Best Actress, Nicholson was Best Supporting Actor, and James L. Brooks won the honors for Best Director, Best Picture, and Best Screenplay.
The story, full of witty repartee and comic situations, covers thirty years of the relationship between Aurora Greenway (MacLaine) and her daughter Emma (Winger). Both women struggle to find joy. Emma gets married immediately upon graduating from high school, bearing two children that she and her husband, college professor Flap Horton (Jeff Daniels) struggle to support. She telephones her mother and asks for money when she is pregnant with her third child. Aurora, not knowing that Emma is already several months pregnant, wants Emma to get an abortion. Emma's once-passionate marriage becomes strained, thanks mostly to his philandering, and she has an affair with an older banker (John Lithgow).
Meanwhile, Aurora, after striking out with many men, gravitates toward her next door neighbor of 15 years, the retired astronaut and playboy Garrett Breedlove (Nicholson).
The film begins at 7 p.m. when you can join host John Hardy in front of The Big Screen at The Red Barn, 3657 63rd St. at Blue Star Hwy., Saugatuck, about a quarter mile east of Exit 41 off of I-196. Suggested donation is $5. Free popcorn from CNJ Popcorn Co. and $1 concessions. Call (269) 857-5300 for more information or email lakeshorearts@comcast.net
