Join us for an intimate concert in our Performance Studio with Peter Mulvey!
THE GOOD STUFF, Peter Mulvey’s fifteenth record, is a collection of standards which promptly rejects the accepted definition of “Standard” in favor of a more vivid, open
approach. The music of Tom Waits is right there with Duke Ellington; Willie Nelson next to Thelonious Monk; Jolie Holland juxtaposed with Bill Frisell. Mulvey (along with his band, the Crumbling Beauties) address each tune with a true artist’s touch.
His mirthful, gravelly baritone is front and center from moment one, and every track is a master class in restraint, phrasing, and commitment.

2011 marks 30 years since AIDS descended. Like an unrelenting hurricane, the epidemic roiled San Francisco for two decades and only began granting some reprieve with medical advancements in the late 90s. The death years of AIDS left the City ravaged and exhausted, yet, as in most of the developed world, the worst seems past. Though thousands are still living with HIV, and new infections continue at an alarming rate, the relentless suffering of the 80s and 90s has given way to a kind of calm, and, understandably, a degree of willful forgetfulness.
We Were Here utilizes San Francisco’s experience with AIDS to open up an overdue conversation both about the history of the epidemic, and the lessons to be learned from it.

9 am - 4:30 pm, M-F and during evening events
Sponsored by:
Michigan Council for Arts & Cultural Affairs and National Endowment for the Arts
Curator: Miranda Krajniak
Old World, New World: Paintings by Rebecca Green features works by the emerging Grand Rapids artist.
An opening reception will be held on Friday, March 23 from 6:00-8:00 pm (free admission, refreshments provided.)
While the SCA has welcomed various artists to exhibit during its 10-year history, this show is unique. “This is the first time that the SCA has curated an exhibition of an up-and-coming regional artist,” shares Miranda Krajniak, SCA Education Manager and Exhibition Curator. “Rebecca is drawing attention throughout West Michigan and beyond as a gifted artist. Her approachable yet quirky sensibility was something we wanted to share with our community.”
The collection of selected work is comprised of pieces created during the past year, all of which deal with the joys and perils of everyday life. While the figures within the paintings find themselves placed in imaginative and colorful settings, they are also faced with the timeless glaze that encompasses each piece.
Green is a graduate of Kendall College of Art and Design with a BFA in Illustration and minor in graphic design. Currently, she lives in Grand Rapids and produces commercial illustration along with gallery work. She also dabbles in retail, three-dimensional work and stop motion animation.
Green’s work has been shown in a number of Michigan galleries as well as in New York and Los Angeles. Most recently, she exhibited at the Gerbens Art Loggia at the DeVos Center for Arts and Worship. Appearances in print include various West Michigan publications as well as national magazines including Bitch and BlueCanvas.

Saugatuck Center For The Arts -Real to Reel: You've Been Trumped

Category: Saugatuck & Douglas Events

In this David and Goliath story for the 21st century, a group of proud Scottish homeowners take on a celebrity tycoon. At stake is one of Britain's very last stretches of wilderness.
American billionaire Donald Trump has bought up hundreds of acres on the northeast coast of Scotland, best known to movie-lovers as the setting for the 1983 classic film Local Hero. And like the American oil tycoon played by Burt Lancaster, he needs to buy out a few more locals to make the deal come true. In a land swimming with golf courses, Trump is going to build two more – alongside a 450-room hotel and 1,500 luxury homes. The trouble is, the land he has purchased occupies one of Europe’s most environmentally sensitive stretches of coast. And the handful of local residents don't want it destroyed.
Told entirely without narration, You've Been Trumped captures the cultural chasm between the glamorous, jet-setting and media savvy Donald Trump and a deeply rooted Scottish community. What begins as an often amusing clash of world views grows increasingly bitter and disturbing. For the tycoon, the golf course is just another deal, with a possible billion dollar payoff. For the residents, it represents the destruction of a globally unique landscape that has been the backdrop for their lives.
Funny, inspiring and heartbreaking in turns, You’ve Been Trumped is both an entertaining, can't-believe-it's-true tale and an environmental parable for our celebrity driven times. The film also offers a rare and revealing glimpse of the unfiltered Donald Trump, as he considers standing as a candidate for President of the United States.

Born in Michigan, Arwady graduated from Hope College and received a Master of Music degree from the Curtis Institute of Music.
In addition to his post with the CMFS, Dr. Andrew Le (Drew) is currently Head of Keyboard Studies and Associate Professor of Piano at Hope College in Holland, Michigan. Academy Award-winner Errol Morris' Tabloid follows the much stranger-than-fiction adventures of Joyce McKinney, a former "beauty queen" whose single-minded devotion to the man of her dreams leads her across the globe and directly onto the front pages of the British tabloid newspapers.
Joyce's crusade for love and personal vindication, as illustrated by Morris, takes her through a surreal world of gunpoint abduction, manacled Mormons, oddball accomplices, bondage modeling, magic underwear and dreams of celestial unions. This notorious affair is barking mad.
Equal parts love story, film noir, brainy B-movie and demented fairy tale, TABLOID is a delirious meditation on hysteria - both public and personal - from a filmmaker who continues to break down and blow open the documentary genre with his penetrating portraits of eccentric and profoundly complex characters.
In TABLOID, Morris concocts another jaw-dropping portrayal, this time of a phenomenally driven woman whose romantic obsessions and delusions catapult her over the edge into scandal-sheet notoriety and an unimaginable life. Long before the days of Lindsay, Britney and the 24-hour news cycle, Joyce McKinney reigned as the ensnaring Femme Fatale accused of sexual defiance. In TABLOID, she is back, and Morris offers up his best guilty treasure.

Saugatuck Center For The Arts Presents Real to Reel: The Interruppters

Interrupters tells the moving and surprising stories of three Violence Interrupters who try to protect their Chicago communities from the violence they once employed.
From acclaimed director Steve James and bestselling author Alex Kotlowitz, this film is an unusually intimate journey into the stubborn persistence of violence in our cities. Shot over the course of a year out of Kartemquin Films, The Interrupters captures a period in Chicago when it became a national symbol for the violence in our cities.
During that period, the city was besieged by high-profile incidents, most notably the brutal beating of Derrion Albert, a Chicago High School student, whose death was caught on videotape.
The film’s main subjects work for an innovative organization, CeaseFire. It was founded by an epidemiologist, Gary Slutkin, who believes that the spread of violence mimics the spread of infectious diseases, and so the treatment should be similar: go after the most infected, and stop the infection at its source. One of the cornerstones of the organization is the “Violence Interrupters” program, created by Tio Hardiman, who heads the program. The Interrupters — who have credibility on the streets because of their own personal histories — intervene in conflicts before they explode into violence.
The Interrupters follows Ameena, Cobe and Eddie as they go about their work, and while doing so reveals their own inspired journeys of hope and redemption. The film attempts to make sense of what CeaseFire’s Tio Hardiman calls, simply, “the madness”.
