Fan favorite Marcia Ball, bayou queen of the piano, returns to the SCA to kick off our summer mainstage lineup!

Marcia knows how to rock a crowd with an infectious, intelligent and deeply emotional brand of southern boogie, rollicking, roadhouse blues and heartfelt ballads.

Her exquisite piano playing and passionate, playful vocals fuse New Orleans and Gulf Coast R&B with Austin, Texas' deep songwriting tradition into a sound Rolling Stone describes as "Rollicking, playful, good time blues and intimate, reflective balladry..her songs ring with emotional depth."

A five time Grammy nominee, Marcia's music is mixed with equal parts of simmering soul fervor and two-fisted piano pounding, creating a one-of-a-kind concert.

Don't miss your chance to experience this multi-talented performer in our intimate 400-seat theatre. Order your tickets today!

Joplin Ballet: Let our dancers give you a taste of the 1920's with their bright costumes and stylized dancing! Ragtime dance from the Joplin era is no longer in existence today, however the music lives on. Enjoy this fun and frolicy ballet choreographed by Mark Schneider.

The Black Swan: The Black Swan is the most famous variation from the Swan Lake Russian Ballet, performed to the music of Peter Tchaikovsky. Enjoy the beauty of this traditional pas de duex, originated in the third act of the Swan Lake Ballet. Choreographed by David Braciak.

Holland Tulip Festival

Come Early For The Tulips, Come Back For The Festival!

Holland, MI – The unprecedented warm weather in West Michigan has everything blooming well ahead of schedule – including the tulips. But instead of disappointment, the Holland community sees this as a tremendous opportunity to lengthen the annual celebration of tulips.

Come early for the tulips!
There is still no better destination than Holland, Michigan for a day-trip or weekend getaway over the next several weeks leading up to and including the week of the Tulip Time Festival. During the month of April, visitors will experience all the beauty millions of tulips has to offer. Although no one can predict the weather and its affect on the sprouting tulips, it is estimated that the flowers will peak by mid-April.

To incent early travel, Holland area attractions are opening early and some are offering special discounts. In addition, select hotels are offering deals during the month of April. Details are available by visiting www.holland.org and clicking on the Deals & Discounts button on their home page, or by calling 616-394-0000.

Come back for the festival!
All this tulip splendor is capped off by the Tulip Time Festival which runs May 5 – 12. Opening weekend of the festival includes the Tulip Time Run, the opening of the Meijer Midway Carnival, an Art & Craft Fair second to none, and festivities concluding with musical performances and fireworks. The fun and excitement continues throughout the week with national and local performances, three signature parades featuring a few surprises, and over one thousand dancers dressed in authentic Dutch costumes and wooden shoes, high-kicking their way through traditional dances. If it’s genuine Dutch souvenirs you seek, you can find them at the Dutch Marktplaats along with food, art, Dutch heritage performances and demonstrations including wooden shoe carving.

“The city plants mostly late blooming varieties of tulips,” explains Gwen Auwerda, Tulip Time Festival Executive Director. “We’re hoping these late bloomers live up to their name and last into the festival. But, either way, if those arriving in Holland for the Tulip Time Festival take advantage of all the great events, they will not be disappointed.” Don’t miss the chance to “Join the Dance” and be a part of the festival consistently named as one of North America’s Top 100 Events.

Tulip Time Festival 2012 is May 5 – 12. To request a brochure or purchase tickets, call 800.822.2770. Detailed program and event information, as well as online ticket purchase for the coming festival, is available by visiting www.tuliptime.com.

Saugatuck Red Barn Theatre Presents MOMologues

May 3-6, & 10-12, 2012

Play

MOMologues

by Lisa Rafferty, Stefanie Cloutier and Sheila Eppolito

This original comedy about motherhood rips away the gauzy mask of parenthood to reveal what all mothers know but don't always talk about: it's overwhelming and exhausting, but also very, very funny.

From the joys of infertility, through reading the same books over and over and over, to finally seeing your baby get on that school bus, this play mines the laughs and tears of the early years of motherhood. Four separate characters tell their individual stories, either directly to the audience in monologues, or in scenes with each other. Mothers everywhere can relate to the labor stories, the frustration of a simple trip to the store, the quest to connect with other mothers, all of which causes them to plan moms' nights out and arrive in packs to laugh hysterically at this tribute to "the toughest job you'll ever love.

Margo Ramos Kendall directs the cast of MOMologues: Coleen Mary Downey as Maria, Beth Huffman as Ellen, Victoria Marcus as Stefanie, and Sandra Griffin as Char. Please join us after our May 3rd performance for a special opening night reception. Admission is $15 for adults or $12 for Seniors, Students and members of The Lakeshore Arts Alliance. Please call (269) 857-5300 for more information and special group rates. The Red Barn is located at 3657 63rd St. at Blue Star Highway, Saugatuck, about a quarter mile east of Exit 41 off of I-196.

A History of Vintage Base Ball and the South Haven Bark Peelers

In 2009, with the sponsorship and financial backing of the Historical Association of South Haven and Albemarle Corporation, the Bark Peelers Vintage Base Ball Club was formed. The team is composed of 18 "gentlemen" from around the South Haven community who, although not necessarily great ballplayers, love the game of baseball and enjoy the opportunity to play. Vintage Base Ball recreates the way the game was played after the end of the Civil War.

After the end of the Civil War (1865), town teams would offer challenges to each other. Back in those days for one team to travel to a neighboring town was a real effort as roads were not well developed and the main mode of transportation was horse drawn wagons. The whole philosophy of being a host team in a Base Ball game in the 1860s was completely 180 degrees from what it is today. Because it was so difficult for teams to travel to another town to play Base Ball, it was the responsibility of the host team to ensure that the visiting team was treated with great civility and friendship. The host teams took great pride in their ability to be good hosts for the visitors. Host teams went out of their way to find accommodations and provide sumptuous meals for the visiting teams. This philosophy of being good hosts carried over into how the actual game was played. Players took great pride in being “gentlemanly”. Some examples:

• No profanity or derogatory comments were aimed towards the visitors by either the host players or “cranks” (fans). This does not include good natured insults that are normal in this type of game.

• Both the players and the host “cranks” would applaud a good play or good hit by the visitors with a hearty “huzzah” or “well struck” as a sign of appreciation for the high quality of Bball that was being played

• There were no hard slides or any intentional physical contact with opposing players

• The batter indicated to the hurler where he wanted the pitch to be placed. The hurler than tried to throw the ball to that spot

• Players were expected to make their own calls on whether they were out or safe or whether they made a catch or not. The umpire was simply there to enforce the “rules of conduct” or resolve a play that was too close to call by the players

The Bark Peelers play their home games at Kids Corner Field at Monroe Park.

For more information, contact us at barkpeelers@gmail.com or call us at 269-208-4433.
