Saugatuck Red Barn Theatre Presents The Eschelons

Date: Saturday, September 22, 2012
Start Time: 7:30 pm

Location: Red Barn Theatre

Category: Saugatuck & Douglas Events

Get More Details:

The Eschelons, West Michigan’s foremost oldies band, rocked their Red Barn audience so much in June that the theater has asked them back for another hit-filled gig on September 22. The seven member group of musical veterans will take the stage at 7:30 p.m. in a reprise one-night concert featuring matchless musicianship and peerless vocals. Admission is just $20.

These guys are real pros," said Red Barn executive director Pat Huyge. "They brought the house down in June and will probably be even hotter in September." The Eschelons play 50s and 60s rock, doo-wop, and blues, featuring three, four, and five-part harmonies that recapture the sound and spirit of the era.

And they have had plenty of their own original hits, such as "Lonely Christmas," "This Broken Heart," "Angel in My Heart," "Tears of Love," "Lonely Footsteps," "My Lonely Senior Year," and "Waiting." Latest hit penned by Ron Beatty is "Beetle (Goin' Out Saturday Night)." These and other songs are available on their CD.

The five vocalists, keyboards, saxophone, harmonica, guitar, bass and a large array of percussion cover hits by The Lettermen, The Coasters, The Velvets, The Beach Boys, Dion and the Belmonts, Freddie King, and The Stereos. And the group promises to sprinkle in a couple of their own hits from the 50s and 60s.

The performers include Al Bischoff (sax, harmonica, vocals and percussion; Jack Hazelwinkel, bass; Vic Hill, percussion and vocals; Jim VanPutten on sax, percussion and vocals; Warren Beatty, keyboards and vocals; Dick and Rob Beatty on drums; and Ron Beatty on quitar and vocals. Keeping track of all the technology is John Hoekstra, who handles the group’s complex sound system.

Reservations are encouraged. Call the box office (269) 857-5300 or email lakeshore arts @comcast.net. Tickets can also be purchased at The Red Barn, 3657 63rd St. at Blue Star Highway, a quarter-mile east of Exit 41 off US I-196.

South Haven Flywheelers Antique Engine & Tractor Show

The Michigan Flywheelers Museum will host its 24th annual Antique Tractor and Engine Show starting Sept. 6-Sept 9.

One of the highlights of our show is the South Haven Tractor Cruise. Over 130 tractors participate in this event which travels the back roads to beautiful Lake Michigan and then downtown South Haven. Line-up begins on Thursday at 4 p.m. in front of the office. Your tractor must be able to go at least 10 mph, have a slow moving vehicle sign and a full gas tank. The trip will travel through downtown South Haven to South Beach and then to the Huron Street parking lot. There, we will stop for dinner before returning back to the showgrounds. The cruise is a police escorted trip with law enforcement blocking intersections. We ask everyone to stay as close together as possible to prevent large gaps. If someone stalls, please go around and try to catch up. The return trip is also police-escorted, so we encourage everyone to leave at the same time.

One of the largest shows of its kind in the state, the four day event will draw antique farm equipment collectors from all over the United States.

Giant steel steam traction engines, old antique tractors, parades, and live musical entertainment are just a few of the things visitors can see during the show which runs until Sunday, Sept. 9 at 4 p.m.

Besides displays of antique farm equipment, there will be demonstrations at the sawmill, shingle mill and blacksmith shop along with exhibits in Old Towne. Patterned after a 1920s rural village, Old Towne features places like Old Tyme Jail, Abbert & Sons Farm Machinery Repair Shop, a migrant farm camp and a handbuilt log cabin.

Not only does the show have plenty of displays to see, it has lots of activities. Daily parades, antique and lawn tractor pulls, a large outdoor flea market featuring crafts, antiques and items for the home, plenty of old fashioned music, consignment auction on Sunday and valve cover racing.

Evening entertainment line up includes singer Carl Payne on Thursday, Black River Band on Friday and country music by the Bronk Bros. on Saturday. All evening shows begin at 8:30 p.m.

During the day, musical jam sessions and folk musician Joe Foster will be performing in the Stephenson Barn. The Casco Band will take the stage at 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Saturday is considered “Kid’s Day” at the show. Activities start with Valve Cover Races at 9:30 a.m. followed by Kiddies Pedal Pull at noon, a sawdust pile treasure hunt at 3:30 p.m. and the John Dudley Magic Show at 7 p.m. In “The Barnyard,” kids will find plenty to do such as play on a wooden tractor and hay wagon, and have their picture taken amongst the farm animal cutouts. Tractor games will be held for those children who have access to riding lawn tractors. Returning for its third year will be the "Kids Night Time Lawn Tractor Cruise" at 8 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

For shoppers, there is a large outdoor flea market with over 220 vendors selling antique iron, crafts, antiques, household and miscellaneous items. The Wooden Nickel gift shop, which is fashioned after an old general store, will be open as well.

One of the popular activities for young and old is the “South Haven Tractor Cruise.” Scheduled for 4 p.m. Thursday, participants drive tractors of all makes and models into South Haven, cruise along the South Beach, and then stop downtown for an evening of dining and shopping.

The Consignment Auction will kick off Sunday's events. Starting at 9 a.m., the auction is a fundraiser for the museum which uses the proceeds to fund preservation and education projects.

Gates open at 8 a.m. rain or shine. Admission to the show is $6. Children 12 and under are free with an adult. Thursday is Senior’s Day and admission is $3 for those 62 and over. Only service dogs will be allowed entrance with paid admissions.

Rustic camping sites are available on a first-come basis. Cost is $10 per night plus daily admission per person. Pets are allowed with exhibitors, campers and vendors only. Pets are restricted to owners' camp sites at all times. Personal transportation vehicles, such as golf carts, will be charged a $5.00 registration fee.

For more information, contact 269-639-2010, michiganflywheelers@yahoo.com, or Facebook. A complete show schedule is available on Facebook or www.michiganflywheelers.org.

The Michigan Flywheelers Museum is located at 06285 68th Street, two miles east of South Haven.

Join us for an intimate concert in our Performance Studio with Peter Mulvey!

THE GOOD STUFF, Peter Mulvey’s fifteenth record, is a collection of standards which promptly rejects the accepted definition of “Standard” in favor of a more vivid, open
approach. The music of Tom Waits is right there with Duke Ellington; Willie Nelson next to Thelonious Monk; Jolie Holland juxtaposed with Bill Frisell. Mulvey (along with his band, the Crumbling Beauties) address each tune with a true artist’s touch.

His mirthful, gravelly baritone is front and center from moment one, and every track is a master class in restraint, phrasing, and commitment.

Hailing from all corners of the Great Lakes State of Michigan, Lindsay Lou & the Flatbellys are giving a nod to American traditional music, while boldly taking their own songs in new directions.

Distinct vocals, tight harmonies, instrumental expertise, and creative arrangements are all essential characteristics of their unique sound. The group focuses on the original tunes of Lindsay Lou Rilko, which include true-life tales of bank-robbing aunties, moonshinin' grandpas, and celebrations of love, life, and nature.

Don't be surprised to hear bluegrass standards, Beatles hits, and contemporary classics at a Flatbelly's show as well. It's an infectious vibe that could only have been born in the heart of America's Fresh Coast!

10 COMMANDMENTS OF TRIATHLON
1. Read ALL information on website www.steelheadtriathlon.com.
2. Listen to the Course Talk carefully and make sure you get answers to all your race-related questions.
3. If possible, get body marked on Friday at the Expo (Lake Michigan College). There will be long lines on Saturday (Race morning)
4. Plan to arrive at the transition area early! That means 5-5:45 a.m. If you get there late, you may be shutout and prevented from racing. Allow plenty of time for traffic, parking, getting to the site and getting your gear into transition. Transition closes promptly at 6:30 a.m.
5. Remember to bring along (2) water bottles already filled for the bike. Bring water to drink on the way to and before the race.
6. The transition area closes at 6:30 a.m. and re-opens at approximately 1 p.m. (after the last participant is out on the run), regardless of which wave you're in. Do not leave anything in transition that you'll need after you finish the race. For reasons of safety and fairness, we will be strictly enforcing this rule. If necessary, adjust your travel, work or social plans around this schedule before you get to race day.
7. Be sure to hydrate during the race! There will be plenty of Gatorade and water on both the bike and the run course.
8. If you get into trouble in the swim, roll onto your back and raise an arm in the air. If you experience mechanical difficulties during the bike carefully pull over to the right and remove yourself and your bike from the course so as not to endanger other athletes. Make any necessary repairs off the course.
9. Keep to the far RIGHT at all times on the bike course unless in the immediate act of passing. Always pass on the LEFT and then move back to the right after you have safely passed the other cyclist. Use your voice to call out to people that you are passing and look over your shoulder before making a passing move on the left.
10. After finishing, be respectful of other athletes in the race. Please treat other athletes at least as well as you would like to be treated.

Saugatuck Mason Street Warehouse Presents Boeing Boeing

August 17 – September 2
Tues – Sat 8 pm; Sunday 7 pm
(final Sunday @ 2 pm)
$26 - $39.75

In this hilarious Tony Award winning comedy, Bernard, a successful Parisian architect, juggles three flight attendant fiancées: an American woman (Gloria), an Italian woman (Gabriella) and a German woman (Gretchen). He tracks their airlines' timetables while his long-suffering housekeeper, Bertha, reluctantly resets the menus and bedroom decor depending on their arrivals and departures. Bernard has been successful at convincing each woman that she is the only one.
Bernard's old school friend Robert arrives unexpectedly, and Bernard proudly explains to his wide-eyed visitor how he makes his busy romantic schedule run smoothly. He also has a fallback plan for keeping his fiancées separate, involving his country house.

Unfortunately for Bernard, a new, faster Boeing jet has been introduced, changing the timetable. Weather delays occur, and complications arise when the women's behavior does not match Bernard's careful planning. It’s “Frasier” meets “Pan Am” with a twist!

Set at a Catskills resort in 1960, this is the sweetly comic story of Lois and Marge, two friends from Brooklyn in search of good times and romance over one wild Labor Day weekend. The score showcases 18 Neil Sedaka classics, including "Where the Boys Are", "Sweet Sixteen", "Calendar Girl", "Love Will Keep Us Together", and of course, the chart-topping title song.
Marge and her stagestruck best friend Lois arrive at Esther's Paradise Resort in the Catskills on Labor Day Weekend in 1960, on a vacation that was intended to be Marge's honeymoon — until the groom left her at the altar. Lois attempts to console Marge by setting her up with the resort's handsome, self-obsessed singer Del Delmonaco. But her plans backfire when Del mistakenly assumes that Marge's father can further his ambitions to become the next teen heartthrob on American Bandstand. Gazing forlornly at Marge from the wings is geekish cabana boy and aspiring songwriter Gabe.

When he isn't entertaining the guests with classic, but still comical Borscht Belt shtick, house comic Harvey secretly carries a torch for widowed resort owner Esther, who is more preoccupied trying to keep her resort open.

The Red Barn Theater’s classic film series continues July 31 with “The Sound of Music," the hugely popular 1965 musical epic that won five Oscars and guaranteed Julie Andrews her place as the genre's top ingenue. Saugatuck Red Barn Theatre Movie Night-"Evil Under the Sun"

Date: Tuesday, July 24, 2012
Start Time: 7:00 pm

Location: Red Barn Theatre

Category: Saugatuck & Douglas Events

Get More Details:

The Red Barn Theater’s classic film series continues July 24 with “Evil Under the Sun ," a 1981 mystery featuring Peter Ustinov as Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot, with James Mason, Diana Rigg and Roddy McDowall in major character roles. The book is based on Christie's 1941 novel.
An insurance company hires Poirot to check the authenticity of a gigantic engagement ring that had been returned to a millionaire by his unscrupulous former fiancee. Confirming the suspicion that the diamond is a fake, Poirot agrees to travel to an island resort where the ex-fiancee is vacationing and to confront her there.
Maggie Smith is featured as the owner of the island resort hotel, given to her by a former king of "Tyrania" for services rendered. Mason is a New York theatrical producer, and McDowall steals his scenes by impersonating Noel Coward as a theater critic. The whole joint is crawling with former chorus girls (the redoubtable Ms. Rigg foremost among them) and all manner of theater folk drawn to the island as former colleagues of Ms. Smith.
The complicated story is sure to please Agatha Christie fans as well as those of Peter Ustinov who wears very well as the amazing Belgian detective.

Saugatuck Red Barn Theatre Movie Night-"And Then There Were None"

Date: Tuesday, July 17, 2012
Start Time: 7:00 pm

Location: Red Barn Theatre

Category: Saugatuck & Douglas Events

Get More Details:

The Red Barn Theater’s classic film series continues July 17 with “And Then There Were None ," a 1945 comedy thriller featuring veteran character actors Barry Fitzgerald, Walter Huston, C. Aubrey Smith, and Dame Judith Anderson.
The script is based on a play by Agatha Christie (which was based loosely on her book, which was considerably grimmer). The film could be seen as a precursor to modern slasher films with very little visible gore.
Ten strangers, relatively evil folks, are summoned to an island off the coast of Devon by a Mr. Owen, whom none of them knows. Soon, the ten begin to see their fellows voted off the island by way of murder. Each time someone dies, the nonsense poem "Ten Little Indians" is recited, and each death corresponds to one in the poem, and in the proper order. This, of course, is the title of Christie's original book.
Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with old-time TV shows available until 7 p.m. Join host John Hardy in
front of The Big Screen at The Red Barn, 3657 63rd St. at Blue Star Hwy., Saugatuck, about
a quarter mile east of Exit 41 off of I-196. Suggested donation is $5. Free popcorn from

The Red Barn Theater’s film series continues June 26 with “Band of Angels,” the 1957 drama set just before the Civil War and starring Clark Gable,Yvonne DeCarlo, and Sidney Poitier. Based on a novel by Robert Penn Warren, the plot revolves around a woman’s discovery that she is descended from slaves, not plantation aristocrats.

Amantha Starr (De Carlo) is the privileged daughter of a Kentucky plantation owner. However, after he dies, a shocking secret is revealed: unbeknownst to Amantha, her mother had been one of her father's black slaves. Legally now property, she is taken by a slave trader to New Orleans to be sold.

Amantha is put up for auction. When she is callously inspected by a coarse potential buyer, she is rescued from further humiliation by Hamish Bond (Gable), who outbids the cad, paying an exorbitant price for her. Expecting the worst, Amantha is surprised to be treated as a lady, not a slave, by her new owner. At his city mansion, she meets his key slaves, his housekeeper (and former lover) Michele (Carolle Drake) and his conflicted right-hand-man Rau-Ru (Poitier). Rau-Ru is grateful for the kindness, education and trust Hamish has bestowed on him, but hates him anyway. Over time, Amantha loves Bond, but finds out that he had been a slave trader.

Saugatuck Red Barn Theatre Movie Night "Picnic"

Date: Tuesday, June 19, 2012
Start Time: 7:00 pm

Location: Red Barn Theatre

Category: Saugatuck & Douglas Events

Get More Details:

The Red Barn Theater’s film series continues June 19 with “Picnic,” the 1955 romance based on a play by William Inge and featuring theme music that became a hit on its own. William Holden stars as Hal Carter, the drifter who disrupts the smug life in a small community, and Kim Novak is Madge Owens, the town beauty.

The plot covers a 24-hour period: September 5, 1955. Hal is a former college football star, adrift and unemployed after army service and a failed Hollywood acting career. On Labor Day he arrives by freight train in a Kansas town to visit a fraternity buddy, Alan Benson (Cliff Robertson), the son of a wealthy grain elevator owner. Hal meets Madge, who is dating his friend.

Madge’s mother (Betty Field) hopes that she will marry Alan, whose father thinks Madge is beneath his son. Hal gets along wonderfully with almost everyone, and Alan is very happy to see "same old Hal," whom he takes to the family's sprawling grain elevator operations. He promises Hal a steady job as a "wheat scooper" (though Hal is disappointed he is not made an executive) and invites Hal to the town's Labor Day picnic. Hal is wary about going to the picnic, but Alan nudges him into it, saying Hal's "date" for the picnic will be Madge's bookish younger sister Millie (Susan Strasberg), who is quickly drawn to Hal's cheerful outlook and charisma.

During the picnic, everyone is unmasked, and by the next morning the question is whether Hal and Madge will find each other.
