SAUGATUCK PRESENTS CHANTAL CHAMBERLAND

Location: Saugatuck Center For The Arts

Here are the details:

Smooth as a dry martini and equally intoxicating, smoky-voiced Chantal Chamberland returns to the Saugatuck Center for the Arts over Labor Day Weekend for her only U.S. appearance of 2010!

Chamberland (accompanied by her full band) dishes up sultry renditions of pop and jazz hits ranging from the Bee Gee’s "How Deep is your Love” to the Rodgers and Hart classic "Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered”. Toronto Life Magazine calls Chantal, “A consummate jazz cabaret performer; the owner of a husky, longing-laden voice that can suggest both passion and nostalgia.” Jazz on the Rocks says of her current album, “The Other Woman”, “Just when you thought the voice could not get any smoother, stronger or sexier, Chantal serves up this latest release.”

Chamberland, who is a Canadian grammy winner, was raised in Montreal on the music of Edith Piaf, Ella Fitzgerald and Artie Shaw. Eventually, she moved to Ontario to pursue music professionally. Chamberland launched her professional career as part of an acoustic folk-rock duo, performing at venues and festivals throughout North America and sharing the stage with notables including Sarah McLachlan and the Barenaked Ladies. She then took a brief sabbatical during and began exploring new areas of music and experimenting in a genre that had always been close to her heart – Jazz. Since then, Chamberland has never looked back.

Says music writer Jerry D’Souza, “Chantal has a warm, toasty voice that can light up a dark room and send a glow through her audience.” Her vocal delivery is so alluring that Canadian music critic, Nick Krewen, describes her singing as "making love to her songs". For more information about Chantal Chamberland, visit http://www.chantalchamberland.com/

Don’t miss this opportunity to see Chamberland in her only United States performance this year!

Start Time: 12:00 pm End Time: 7:00 pm

(Time Zone: US/Eastern)

Category: Saugatuck & Douglas Events

Here are the details:

SAUGATUCK, MICHIGAN- The 23rd Annual Taste of Saugatuck will be held Sunday, August 22 from noon until 7:00pm at Wick's Park and Water Street in downtown Saugatuck.

This family event brings together over a dozen local culinary artisans and restaurants preparing a vast array of edibles. Featured items this year include BBQ sandwiches, Margarita chicken, Gyro wraps, Saganaki, roasted chicken, pork ribs, ice cream desserts, pizza and various wraps & sandwiches, just to name a few. Some of the restaurants joining Taste this year include: Mermaid Bar & Grill, The White House Bistro, Wicks Park Bar & Grille, The Hickory Pit, Spectators, River Market, Kilwin's and more. In addition to the largest line up of food in recent years, a beer tent featuring beer from the Saugatuck Brewery is available along with wine from all three local wineries, Fenn Valley, Tabor Hill and Round Barn.

As always a special kids corner will be available to entertain the kids. This year will also see the return of Shoreline Realtor's "Celebrity Dunk" Tank. There is no general admission charge for this annual event. Food and beverage tickets are available in fifty-cent increments and no single taste item is more than $5.00, making it a very affordable afternoon for a family.

Taste of Saugatuck, through its association with the Saugatuck/Douglas Convention & Visitors Bureau, raises funds from this event for local school scholarships and events. This year, additional sponsorship is provided by the Stage Sponsor: Chemical Bank.

The Gazebo in the park will feature live entertainment all afternoon. The day begins with West Michigan's Rock & Roll legends, Rock Shop. "Tombo", Ron, Rich and Bob have been featured all over west Michigan. Their classic rock sound with "dueling" guitars will have the crowd on their feet. Rock Shop performed this summer at the Coral Gables Deck, and is a White House Bistro year-round favorite.

Returning to headline Taste this year is Holland's Random Play. Playing favorites from the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's, this high energy band of six blends keyboards, flute, saxophones and more with its traditional four piece, rock driving guitar, bass and drum sound. They are featured performers at The White House Bistro and perform at many fundraising events throughout the area. Taste co-chair, David Barton, brags, "The crowd will be on their feet from the minute they start until the last, rocking song at seven o'clock."

Over eight thousand attended Taste last year, and an even larger crowd is expected this year. Visitors and locals alike mingle while enjoying great food, great music, and great wine and beer in a beautiful Saugatuck downtown setting. "When you get to Saugatuck, you can hear the sounds and smell the great food as you drive into town," co-chair Sharon Shanahan adds.

South Haven-Biking The Kal-Haven Trail

While vacationing in Michigan recently, I rented a bike and checked out the Kal-Haven Trail, a 33.5-mile multi-use trail that runs from South Haven to Kalamazoo.

Awesome!

The bike rental cost $14; entry fee to the trail was $3, which I slipped into a drop box at the trailhead in South Haven.

The route, part of the Rails-to-Trails program that converts old railroad tracks to hike-and-bike (and cross country ski and snow mobile) trails, stretched out long and straight from the quaint little resort town on Lake Michigan where my mom lives.

I rolled past the Black River, over a wonderful covered bridge, past fields of blueberry bushes and into the woods.

I know Texas has trees, but it doesn’t have trees like this, which grow tall and thick and spread their shady arms overhead like a protective umbrella.

I passed a few runners and other cyclists close to town, but the farther away from South Haven I pedaled, the fewer folks I saw. I rode 15 miles out, then turned and came back the same 15.

No hills, no traffic, no stoplights, no cars to deal with — just miles of limestone/slag path, a herd of baby frogs and the occasional swam of mosquitoes.

There’s also a quirky little museum in a train car and a little shop that bakes up fresh cinnamon rolls along the way.

Next time, I’m going all the way to Kalamazoo! Folks at the bike shop told me a shuttle service will pick you up and bring you back to South Haven for $6 a person.

Beautifully situated ten miles south of Holland (Michigan) and six miles north of Saugatuck, the Felt Estate was once the luxurious summer home and hobby of self-made millionaire and inventor Dorr E. Felt. The mansion, listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the Michigan State Register of Historic Sites, retains the architectural beauty of a bygone era and offers a glimpse into the wealth and lifestyle of the Roaring 20s – a time cut short by The Great Depression.
The Man & His Invention

Born in Wisconsin on March 18, 1862, Dorr Eugene Felt left his home at age 14 to work in a machine shop where he honed his mechanical skills. In 1882 he moved to Chicago to secure employment and advance his keen interest in machine design. He had 50 cents in his pocket.

In 1886, Felt invented the first office processing machine, the Comptometer, which was able to perform quickly and accurately four math functions. Dramatically increasing bookkeeping skills and speed, the Comptometer was an instant success and made Dorr Felt a millionaire.

Dorr was attracted to the pristine beauty of the West Michigan coastline and in 1919 purchased several hundred acres on Lake Michigan in the rolling dunes between Holland and Saugatuck, which the family referred to as ‘Shore Acres’. Felt began construction of the “Big House” in 1925 for his wife, Agnes. This summer home would be large enough to accommodate his married daughters and their families. Completed in 1928, the 17,000 square foot mansion consists of 25 rooms, including a third-floor ballroom.

Unfortunately, Agnes died in August of 1928, six weeks after the family moved in, and

Dorr died a year and a half later in 1930. The family kept the home until 1949, but after WWII and the advent of more sophisticated calculators, the family business declined. The Felt descendants decided to sell ‘Shore Acres’. In 1949, they held a large auction, selling off many of the items original to the mansion and grounds.

The Seminary Years

The St. Augustine Seminary, a Catholic prep school for young men, bought the mansion and grounds in 1949. Outgrowing the carriage house, which they used for classrooms, and the mansion which they used for housing, the Seminary built a school on the ridge west of the mansion. After moving into the school, in the mid 1960s, a group of cloistered nuns lived in the mansion.

The Prison Years

In the late 1970s, the State of Michigan purchased the property to use as a prison. The mansion became offices for the State Police, and for WEMET, a drug enforcement agency. The State owned the grounds until the early 1990s when Laketown Township bought the land for one dollar, with the stipulation that the mansion be used for the public, not sold or razed.

The Restoration Project

Today, Laketown Township and surrounding communities are restoring the mansion and grounds to their 1920’s splendor. It is the vision of the Township and volunteers to return the structure and grounds to their original splendor so the public can appreciate its beauty, while learning more about our local history, and the era when great effort was put to the task of building fine homes. The restoration is a unique community project, in some ways as impressive as the mansion itself, involving many individual, student, group, and corporate volunteers.

Sunken Treasure In Lake Michigan: Century-Old Ship

June 24, 2010

A century-old maritime mystery has been solved. In 1898, the wooden steamship L.R. Doty sank during a fierce storm in the waters of Lake Michigan, killing all 17 people — and two cats — aboard.
The ship was never seen again — until last week. A group of Wisconsin divers discovered the shipwreck at the bottom of the lake, not far from the Milwaukee shores.
The search team was operating on a 20-year-old tip from a commercial fisherman, says Brendon Baillod, president of the Wisconsin Underwater Archaeology Association. Baillod is the Great Lakes maritime historian who led the search for the L.R. Doty.
"The L.R. Doty was found by a commercial fisherman in 1991 who was out netting chubs in deep water, and he snagged a large obstruction on the bottom of the lake," Baillod tells NPR's Michele Norris. "He told a couple of people about it locally, but not much was made of it — because it was in 300 feet of water and at that time it might as well have been on the moon."
Baillod says he became interested in the L.R. Doty around the time he started collecting accounts of Great Lakes shipwrecks from a database of all of the master vessels lost on the lakes.
So he and his crew picked a day that had good weather and sent divers looking for the ship.
"We were waiting for them to reappear on the line when a large red lift bag shot up our mooring line and came to the surface with a note attached to it," Baillod says. "And our hearts all sank because we really felt that there had been an accident below — usually notes like that say, 'Call the Coast Guard.' We pulled the note off and read it and it said: 'All divers safe, back in 80 minutes, huge wooden freighter on the bottom.' So we knew right then and there we had found the long-lost wreck of the L.R. Doty."
Unlike shipwrecks in the ocean, this one is in "pristine condition," Baillod says.
"Because the lakes don't have any of the marine boring worms that the ocean has, there's not much life on the bottom of the lake — it preserves wood tremendously well," he says. The ship is upright, intact and looks like it did when it sailed Lake Michigan, except the pilothouses and deck hatches blew off in the disaster, Baillod says.
Modern-day divers photographed a wheelbarrow that ended up on the deck of the sunken L.R. Doty, which is upright and intact on the bottom of Lake Michigan."All of the articles from 1898 that the crew had on them are still in the cabins of the ship in the same condition they were left," he says. "Unfortunately, there's also 17 human bodies on the ship. None of the human remains were ever found after she was lost in 1898, and we suspect that most of the crew was hunkered down in the ship because they were in 30-foot seas in a vessel that only came 20 feet above the surface. And the waves were literally broaching right over her deck so we suspect that none of the crew were even able to escape to the surface."
Shipwrecks in the Great Lakes are protected under state law.
"This wreck is owned by the people of Wisconsin," he says. "It's considered an archaeological site and a gravesite. Divers are welcome to visit the site, but we take only pictures. It requires a salvage permit from our state historical society to remove anything. And really we haven't had a lot of luck removing artifacts: It's expensive to preserve them and there's really limited interest in them once they come to the surface."

Cheating scandal AT U.S. Open rocks bass- fishing community

A professional angler found to have stuffed lead sinkers down the throats of fish he submitted for weigh-ins during a prestigious bass-fishing tournament has been banned for life from that and other competitions in a scandal that has rocked the tight-knit and passionate bass-fishing community.

Mike Hart, a successful Southern California pro whose career earnings total more than $200,000, was accused of cheating in this manner during the recent $100,000 U.S. Open held at sprawling Lake Mead on the Nevada-Arizona border. An official with the Western Outdoor News bass tour said Hart confessed after he was caught virtually red-handed.

WON Bass will not pursue criminal charges against Hart, but the episode has tournament organizers around the country speaking out against cheating and seeking ways to prevent their events from being similarly tarnished.

"On the one hand it was a day of infamy for organized bass fishing in America," said Harvey Naslund, director of the WON circuit. "But on the other hand it was a major victory for all who have long cared for, and taken steps to protect the integrity of bass-fishing tournaments."

Catching a cheat is difficult because tournaments are catch-and-release, so bass are kept in aerated wells on the boats and weighed live at the end of each fishing day, then released.

However, sometimes bass die after being caught and Hart had offered three dead fish during the weigh-in on the second-to-last day of the U.S. Open. They were filleted so the meat could be delivered to a charity, and found to contain weights.

Officials waited until the final day to confront Hart, who turned in a full limit of five bass. All five were found to contain lead sinkers.

In all, nine sinkers were removed from bass turned in by Hart. Naslund said each sinker was torpedo-shaped and weighed two ounces. Each was attached to a short line and tied to a small treble hook, presumably to catch in the throat and hopefully keep the weights from entering the belly and being detected if the bass were cut open.
WON Bass determined that Hart acted alone, even though he had a lower-tier "Triple-A" fishing partner aboard his boat during each of the three days of the U.S. Open.

Naslund explained that the Triple-A partner fishes from the back of the boat while the pro stands at the bow, driving and steering with a foot-powered trolling motor.

On the third day of fishing, Naslund said, Hart was said to have asked his partner -- who had flown in from South Korea -- to change places while he rigged some tackle and checked on the fish in the live-well.

"The same scenario existed on Day 1 and Day 2 of the U.S. Open," Naslund said.

The South Korean angler, who would have shared part of whatever purse Hart had been entitled to after the third and final day, was given a refund for his entry fee.

For what it's worth, the U.S. Open was won by Arizona pro Clifford Pirch, with a total weight of 31.44 pounds. He earned $40,000, plus a new bass boat.

Saugatuck Dune Rides

The dune rides date back to 1954 when Ron Jousma, then 21 and home from the Army, decided Saugatuck needed a dune ride similar to those at Silver Lake near Hart. He bought the present dune property west of Goshorn Lake from a Chicago man and turned his 1942 Ford convertible into a dune buggy with seats in the rumble seat.
He added a 1946 and 1947 Ford coupe, cut off the tops, outfitted the cars with super-wide tires and cut trails in the dunes.
In 1961, Jousma and a friend picked up two half-ton Ford truck chassis and drove them back from Kansas City sitting on wooden boxes. They were outfitted with steel beds and seats and joined the fleet.
Still later Dodge Power Wagons were added and equipped with aircraft tires to operate in the sand.
In 1971 Jousma opened a dune ride in Great Sand Dunes National Monument, Colorado and operated both rides until selling them in 1978 to an Indiana family.
In 1981, Linus and Janice Starring purchased the business. The two never had ridden on the schooners until they inspected them prior to purchasing the business. Saugatuck Dune Rides remains a part-time job for the Starring family. Linus, with a degree in heavy equipment, is a railroad engineer for two small freight lines in Michigan during the off-season. Janice manages the office and handles all booking and scheduling.
Even as a part time business, there's plenty of maintenance to do. Shifting sands require daily grading of the trails in the dunes. Driving in sand dunes means the schooners need oil changes and engine maintenance every 100 miles. During the off season, equipment is fabricated and updated for the following season.
