They put the “mock” in Democracy … the Capitol Steps return to the SCA to help us celebrate Independence Day in high style!

The group was born in December 1981 when some staffers for Senator Charles Percy were planning entertainment for a Christmas party. Their first idea was to stage a nativity play, but in the whole Congress they couldn't find three wise men or a virgin. So, they decided to dig into the headlines of the day, and they created song parodies & skits that conveyed a special brand of satirical humor.

Since they began, the Capitol Steps have recorded over 30 albums, including their latest, Desperate Housemembers featuring John Boehner and his new Republican majority, a bevy of disspirited Democrats, and a cast of international stars including Hosni Mubarak, Silvio Berlusconi and Muammar Qaddafi. If you're tired of hearing about Charlie Sheen, immigration, health care, the budget, partisan politics, unfaithful politicians, or the Tea Party, then you've come to the wrong place!

With musical political satire poking fun at all sides of the issues, it's the one new thing in Washington sure to earn bipartisan support. Don’t miss this great 4th of July party with the Capitol Steps!

JOIN US for an exhibit reception July 21, 5-7 pm.

Since 1953 the Saugatuck/Douglas Art Club has stimulated and encouraged the creation, study, and presentation of the performing and creative arts. The group has shown a spotlight on our area's rich cultural heritage, and supported freedom of artistic expression. As a result, the Art Club has served as an incubator, sponsor, and supporter of both artists and new arts organizations in its artistically vibrant hometowns.

This retrospective exhibition is a celebration of the legacy of the Saugatuck/Douglas Art Club. Begun as a way for artists to support each other during the winter months in Michigan, the club has grown into a vibrant arts organization that has gifted nearly $200,000 in scholarship money, supporting local students who wish to continue their education in the arts.

Saugatuck Center For The Arts Presents Dan Hicks & the Hot Licks

Start Time: 8:00 pm

Location: Saugatuck Center For The Arts

Category: Saugatuck & Douglas Events

The long-time king of hipster-chic, Dan Hicks, brings his sizzling, utterly unique sound to the SCA! For three decades Hicks has blazed a trail across the Americana horizon, working with and influencing legendary artists including Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, Bette Midler, Brain Setzer, Willie Nelson and Jimmy Buffett, among others.

Hicks is truly an American original. Since the early 1960s, Hicks has deftly blended elements of Swing, Jazz, Folk and Country music to create the appealing sound he sometimes calls "Folk Jazz". His counter-culture appeal, which has twice landed him on the cover of Rolling Stone, has always been rooted in his songwriting. His lyrics have been touted as some of the sharpest-tongued, driest-witted, and subtly hilarious bits of irreverence ever committed to rhyme.

Don’t miss this chance to see why Tom Waits says, “Dan Hicks is fly, sly, wily and dry!”and Bette Midler calls Hicks “lighting in a bottle!”

Hick's irresistible sense of rhythm, hip lyrical styling, laid-back vocalizing, and infamous on-stage wit make this a “not to be missed” show!
