Stringband/Jazz/Folk
The Wiyos' original music is inspired by early American musical idioms of the 1920s and '30s, but the band has a reputation for gleefully subverting genre distinctions - seamlessly fusing vintage sounds with the contemporary without sounding forced or affected. Their live performances take audiences back to an era before TV and mass-media were the main sources of entertainment. In 2009, Bob Dylan handpicked the band to open the 7-week Bob Dylan Show tour, with Willie Nelson & John Mellencamp.

A History of Vintage Base Ball and the South Haven Bark Peelers
In 2009, with the sponsorship and financial backing of the Historical Association of South Haven and Albemarle Corporation, the Bark Peelers Vintage Base Ball Club was formed. The team is composed of 18 "gentlemen" from around the South Haven community who, although not necessarily great ballplayers, love the game of baseball and enjoy the opportunity to play. Vintage Base Ball recreates the way the game was played after the end of the Civil War.
After the end of the Civil War (1865), town teams would offer challenges to each other. Back in those days for one team to travel to a neighboring town was a real effort as roads were not well developed and the main mode of transportation was horse drawn wagons. The whole philosophy of being a host team in a Base Ball game in the 1860s was completely 180 degrees from what it is today. Because it was so difficult for teams to travel to another town to play Base Ball, it was the responsibility of the host team to ensure that the visiting team was treated with great civility and friendship. The host teams took great pride in their ability to be good hosts for the visitors. Host teams went out of their way to find accommodations and provide sumptuous meals for the visiting teams. This philosophy of being good hosts carried over into how the actual game was played. Players took great pride in being “gentlemanly”. Some examples:
• No profanity or derogatory comments were aimed towards the visitors by either the host players or “cranks” (fans). This does not include good natured insults that are normal in this type of game.
• Both the players and the host “cranks” would applaud a good play or good hit by the visitors with a hearty “huzzah” or “well struck” as a sign of appreciation for the high quality of Bball that was being played
• There were no hard slides or any intentional physical contact with opposing players
• The batter indicated to the hurler where he wanted the pitch to be placed. The hurler than tried to throw the ball to that spot
• Players were expected to make their own calls on whether they were out or safe or whether they made a catch or not. The umpire was simply there to enforce the “rules of conduct” or resolve a play that was too close to call by the players
The Bark Peelers play their home games at Kids Corner Field at Monroe Park.

Saugatuck Center For The Arts Presents "Stonewall Uprising"
Date: Thursday, May 12, 2011
Start Time: 7:00 pm
Location: Saugatuck Center For The Arts
Category: Saugatuck & Douglas Events
Get More Details:
$5 – SCA + HAAC members, students / $7 non-members
The most thorough documentary exploration of the three days of unrest beginning June 28, 1969, when patrons of the Stonewall Inn, a seedy Mafia-operated gay bar in Greenwich Village, turned on the police after a routine raid, “Stonewall Uprising” methodically ticks off the forms of oppression visited on gays and lesbians in the days before the gay rights movement.
At the time of the riots, homosexuality was illegal in every state except Illinois. Before the laws were changed, one commentator observes, gay bars offered the same kind of social haven for an oppressed minority as black churches in the South before the civil rights movement.
Directed by Kate Davis and David Heilbroner, this all-new assemblage of rare home-movie footage, photographs, and gripping testimony from people who were there — including one of the cops who led the raid — allows viewers to experience a landmark civil rights event in a fresh and fascinating way.

TICKETS ON SALE FOR SCA MEMBERS Tuesday, Feb 1; tickets on sale to the general public Thursday, Feb. 3 (Not a member? Join to take advantage of this special 48 hour pre-sale!)
You heard the buzz last time he was in town … don’t miss seeing pop-rock icon and Grammy winner Colin Hay when he returns to the SCA in his only scheduled appearance in West Michigan during 2011.
Though a generation knew Hay as the front man for the multi-platinum award-winning group “Men At Work” (the band's two albums Business as Usual and Cargo were international blockbusters spawning the hits "Who Can It Be Now?" "Down Under" “Overkill” and “It’s a Mistake”) a new generation knows the singer/songwriter from TV appearances and smash-hit movie soundtracks. Hay's "I Just Don't think I'll Ever Get Over You" was part of the phenomenally successful soundtrack to the film "Garden State" which won the 2005 Grammy Award for best soundtrack. He has made appearances in cult movies and television shows including The Larry Sanders Show, What About Brian, the Black Donnellys, and on Scrubs performing his own music.
Hay’s latest disk, American Sunshine (2009), is a multifaceted portrait of Colin Hay the performer, songwriter, and recording artist. It follows the critically acclaimed, "Are You Looking At Me" (2007) which includes the title track, the quirky "What Would Bob Do" and the gorgeous "Pure Love".
Hay keeps up an Olympian touring schedule, criss-crossing the United States and the globe, winning over audiences with moving lyrics and hilarious insights into an absolutely unique career and life. "On a nightly basis the audience and I share time, space, and secrets,” Hay says. “Then we move on with our lives. But, the good ones stay with me, and give purpose to the road ahead."

Symbiote, Bonnie Keller-Midwest Properties, Century Restoration LLC-David & Janice Varney
Curated by James Schmiechen and Patrick Pozezinski
Exhibit Reception: Thursday, June 2, 5-7 pm
This exhibition, created in collaboration with the Saugatuck-Douglas Historical Society, takes a fascinating look at how West Michigan’s unique micro-climate created a fruit growing industry worth millions of dollars. In turn, the seemingly endless bushels of fruit ultimately led to the basket factory, fruit grower’s bank, the fruit exchange, and shipping industry right here in Saugatuck-Douglas. And ultimately, the Lloyd J Harris Pie Company – which today is the Saugatuck Center for the Arts.
Using photography, text, and drawings, PIE describes the village economy, culture, and history of the fruit growing industry from the planting of orchards in the 1820’s to the unlikely but highly successful adaptive re-use of an abandoned Pie factory turned Arts center in 2003.
