The exhibit fills both galleries with vibrant colors of children's imagination and is put together and hung by the area elementary art teachers. This exhibit is a part of the South Haven Center for the Arts' community outreach program to enhance the experience of the arts for school age children in our area.

The goal of the Town Crier 5K & 10K is to provide an outstanding competitive event for runners that encourages health, exercise and fun for all! Two new courses this year-the 10K which includes a loop on the bike path and woods southwest of town and the 5K winding around historic Saugatuck. Run both races for just one entry fee. The 1K Crier Kids Dash is a non-competitive fun run to interest kids in running as a sport. The Town Crier will benefit Saugatuck Public School athletics, Community Recreation, Saugatuck Youth Center and SABA.
Race Details
The 10K begins at 9 a.m. Next is the Crier Kids Dash at 9:15 a.m The 5K will begin between 10 and 10:15 a.m. depending on the 10K finishers. Sanjukta Banerjee performs two of India's most important dance forms: the Bharata Natyam and the Mohiniyattam. Both are ancient dance forms deeply infused with spiritual meaning.
Bharata Natyam, often called the national dance of India, is considered to be a 'fire dance' — the mystic manifestation of the metaphysical element of fire in the human body. Mohiniyattam is a traditional South Indian dance from Kerala. It is one of the eight Indian classical dance forms and literally means "dance of the enchantress".
Nai’mah and Jessica Tomaz also take the stage, demonstrating a high energy blend of American and Indian dance techniques that translate into sheer artistry.
Sanjukta Banerjee has undergone rigorous training of both the Bharatanatyam and Mohiniattam under Guru Smt.Thankamani Kutty, a reputed disciple of Guru Chinnammu Amma of Kerala Kalamandalam. Sanjukta has also been under the tutelage of the great Kathakali maestro Late Guru P. Govindan Kutty, for special attention on Hastas and Abhinaya. She has also attended extensive workshops and lecture demonstrations under Bharati Shivaji, Chitra Vishwesharan & Dr. Kanak Rele.

Filled with images of Detroit's heyday projected against now-crumbling buildings, Julien Temple's new BBC documentary "Requiem for Detroit?" tracks the Motor City's past, present and future. Temple characterizes its decline as "a slow-motion Katrina that has had many more victims."
Built by the car for the car, with its groundbreaking suburbs, freeways and shopping centers, Detroit was the embodiment of the American dream. But its intense race riots brought the army into the city and with violent union struggles against the fierce resistance of Henry Ford and the Big Three, Detroit was also the scene of American nightmares.
Temple now sees Detroit as a truly dystopic post-industrial city, in which 40 percent of the land in the City center is returning to prairie. Greenery grows up through abandoned office blocks, houses and collapsing car plants, and swallows up street lights.
There is no more rush hour on what were the first freeways in America. Crime, vandalism, arson and dog fighting are the main activities in once the largest building in North America. But it's also a source of hope.
Streets are being turned to art. Farming is coming back to the centre of the city. Young people are flocking to help. The burgeoning urban agricultural movement is the fastest growing movement in the US. Detroit may lead the way again but in a very different direction.

Comprised of dhol (double-sided, barrel-shaped North Indian drum slung over one shoulder), drumset, percussion, sousaphone, and 5 horns, this NYC-based group plays fresh originals and Bollywood favorites with an explosive stage performance and presence.

Saugatuck, MI. –The Saugatuck/Douglas Convention & Visitors Bureau will sponsor the 9th Annual St. Patrick's Day Festival on Saturday, March 12, 2011. In honor of the event, the two communities have been renamed O'Saugatuck & McDouglas by proclamation of their respective city councils for this special occasion.
At 2 pm on March 12th, back by popular demand, is the pet themed, “Erin Go Bark!” People and their Pets Parade. Visitors as well as local residents are invited to participate in the parade to express their “Irish Side.” Participants are encouraged to include their pets in the event by dressing them in a “wee bit of green”. Awards will be given to the top three best dressed pets. You don't have to claim Irish lineage to celebrate, so dress your dog, build a shamrock float, dress like a leprechaun or decorate you car. Line up for the parade will be in the parking lot at the Saugatuck Center for the Arts at 1:30 pm.
The 5th annual St. Patrick's Day Pub Crawl sponsored by the Ship N Shore Motel will be held on March 12th beginning at 2 pm. Guests will be visiting area pubs and bars via trolley and on foot to enjoy fine spirits, food & camaraderie. For more information call 269-857-2194.

Butterflies Are Blooming is Meijer Gardens' most popular annual exhibition and the largest temporary tropical butterfly exhibit in the nation. March 1–April 30, visitors can escape the Michigan winter and mingle with more than 6,000 tropical butterflies flying free in the 15,000-square-foot Lena Meijer Conservatory.
The exhibition boasts more than 40 different species from the Far East, Africa and Central America. Each week hundreds of chrysalises arrive at Meijer Gardens and are painstakingly sorted, inspected, labeled and pinned in our sealed Butterfly Bungalow. The chrysalises are then placed in a special emergence area of the Bungalow where visitors can witness through a window their magical transformation into butterflies!
Once ready to be released into the Conservatory, the butterflies are placed on plants where they acclimate to the environment and gain strength before taking to the air. It's a wonderful place for photos and just one of the opportunities for visitors to observe the butterflies up-close and personal. Throughout the tropical environment, butterflies can be viewed drinking nectar from the flowering plants and feeding stations, lighting on the odd nose or shoulder, and congregating along the stream beds, as well as in flight all around.
During the exhibition, the Lena Meijer Children's Garden offers special activities. Additionally, interactive displays are featured throughout.

Bob Milne is considered to be the best ragtime/boogie-woogie pianist in the world. He was filmed and documented for future generations in 2004 during three days of interviews at the Library of Congress, and was declared a “National Treasure” at the conclusion.
Milne teaches music history at various universities around the country, and is also the founder and director of the Frankenmuth Ragtime Festival in Michigan. He currently teaches music and music history at Florida/Atlantic University every winter for Lifelong Learning. His courses are among the most popular in the curriculum.
He has appeared at numerous festivals around the world including, the Scott Joplin Ragtime Festival (Sedalia, Missouri), the Montreal Jazz Festival, the Eau Claire Ragtime Festival, Sacramento Ragtime Festive, and many others.

13th Annual Chili Cook-off and Wine Lover’s Potluck

During the bitter cold of winter, on January 22nd, the chill is going to thaw at Fenn Valley’s 13th annual Chili Cook-off. Last year over 750 people gathered to enjoy some fine wine and taste the chilies and other great appetizers.
This year we are again challenging you to dust-off your soup pot and bring your secret recipe out to compete for the awards of Best Chili in each category. For those of you who do not wish to participate in the cook-off, we invite you to bring a pot of chili or an appetizer to be included in our “wine lover’s potluck”.
We have changed the categories - they are based on the type of meat, if any, used in the recipe. There are now four categories: "Four Legs" (beef & pork), "Two Legs" (fowl), "Vegetarian" (no meat), and "Exotic" (seafood and wild game, including venison). Hopefully this new system will allow for more entries as well as make the judging easier and more consistent.
Contestants must pre-register their chilies prior to the event (accepted Jan 1) and submit their chili entry between 1:00 and 2:00 pm on the day of the event. The judging will begin at 2:00 sharp and should be concluded by 3:00 pm. We are fortunate to have been able to secure the talents of some local chefs and instructors from the culinary arts school of Grand Rapids Community College to serve as our panel of judges.
For those non-contestants, the “wine lover’s potluck” will begin at 2:00 pm. During the potluck, everyone will be able to enjoy the chilies from the cook-off, the appetizers and chilies provided by the non-contestants, and a selection of new wines from the past vintage.
We are also pleased to include the musical talents of Natchez Trace for your enjoyment. They play classic popular favorites and have performed at a number of our Summer Evening Cookouts and Open House events during the past three or four years.
The cost of admission will be either a chili entry per family, or a favorite appetizer or pot of chili for the potluck. Last year we received some complaints about not enough food and chili. Remember, this is your party - we provide the venue and the entertainment, you provide the food. If you want to eat chili, then bring chili. You do not have to enter a chili in the contest to bring a chili! In addition to your food, we will be making some of our newest wines available for your enjoyment: Pinot Grigio, Riesling, Meritage 2009, and the Late Harvest Seyval 2010.
Be sure to take advantage of the big savings at our annual cellar clearance sale – 3 bottles for the price of 2. Select wines to be announced in December.
All three bottles must be the same wine, no mix’n matching, please. While supplies last, some items are in short supply – no “rain checks”. The cellar clearance sale runs from 11-5 on Saturday January 22 and 12:30-5 on Sunday January 23 only. Telephone and mail orders are accepted, provided pickup or shipment occurs by February 1, 2011.

Categorization of chili is determined as follows:
If your chili contains any animal that walks on 4 legs, it will be placed in the "4 legs" category.
If your chili contains any animal with 2 legs, it will be placed in the "2 legs" category.
If your chili contains no meat or any animal with no legs, it will be placed in the "Vegetarian" category.
If your chili contains seafood or wild game (including venison),it will be placed in the "Exotic" category.
There are no cooking facilities available, so entries must be received in a ready-to-judge form. (We recommend a crock pot).
All chilies must arrive between 1-2 pm in a crock pot as warm as possible. Any chili arriving after 2 pm will not be judged and will be added to the pot luck.
One entry per person.
There are a maximum of 30 entries per category.
There will be a prep area for last minute additions to the chili if necessary. Once we check-in the chili, you will have no further contact with the bulk container of chili.
There will be 3 judges per category. Each judge will use a 14-point scale and all chilies are judged blind. Criteria that will be evaluated include: Color, Aroma, Texture, Heat/Spice, Flavor, and Overall enjoyment.
A three-member panel will evaluate each category, and the highest scoring chili from each category will be re-evaluated by all nine judges for the position of grand champion.
Any ingredient you feel will enhance the flavor of the chili is allowed. Beans, macaroni, rice and other similar ingredients are encouraged.
